UUM ONLINE: Bandar Baru Enstek – In a bid to reform the mindset of management and education practitioners, the Empowerment Programme Towards Strengthening the Mind and Entrepreneurial Skills of Leaders at Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) is expected to create catalytic agents and individuals who can drive institutional success.
According to the Director of the Higher Education Leadership Academy (AKEPT), Prof. Dr Harshita Aini Haroon, the success of the agenda relies on the implementation of well-planned programmes and projects, which can be achieved through collaboration with industry and community players.
She emphasised the significance of the programme, particularly in relation to the Ministry of Higher Education’s (MoHE) contribution to promoting entrepreneurship at HEIs in Malaysia.
She also extended an invitation to all participants to continue their involvement with AKEPT, not just as course attendees but also as valuable contributors of ideas and expertise in the development of programme modules or initiatives aimed at empowering talent in the higher education sector.
"As emphasised by the Minister of Higher Education, expanding the concept of leaders is a crucial goal. I understand that a true leader is defined by their role and responsibilities.
"The presence of all the participants today has elevated each of them to a leadership role in the context of entrepreneurship. I fervently hope that everyone can inspire and promote entrepreneurship within their respective institutions," she said when officiating the programme at AKEPT's Main Hall yesterday.
Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr Mohd Foad Sakdan expressed UUM’s commitment to assisting the management and education practitioners at higher education institutions with implementing reforms to foster entrepreneurial ideas and skills within their respective institutions.
According to him, entrepreneurship is a catalyst for increasing per capita income and driving economic development in a country.
He said, in a micro context, entrepreneurship has the potential to enhance living standards and generate wealth, benefiting not only the entrepreneurs but also the associated businesses.
"In Malaysia, the government launched the National Entrepreneurship Policy in 2019, which is a manifestation of the government's dedication and determination to establish Malaysia as a leading entrepreneurial nation by the year 2030.
"This policy aims to establish a comprehensive, conducive, and inclusive entrepreneurial ecosystem that will contribute to the country's socio-economic development agenda. It begins at the grassroots level and extends to enhancing the country’s competitiveness at regional and international levels.
"Strengthening the entrepreneurial aspect in the Malaysian education system is crucial to cultivating a generation of students who possess creativity, innovation, and strong drive to contribute to the economic growth of the country through entrepreneurship," he said.
According to Prof. Dr Mohd Foad, HEIs must take a proactive role and remain adaptable to the evolving changes in the economic and entrepreneurial environment.
He expressed hope that a programme like this can serve as a valuable platform for empowering HEI leaders and highlighting the importance of the entrepreneurial university concept.
This programme also featured a presentation by Prof. Dato' Dr Khairanum Subari from UniKL. The talk was titled 'Development of Progressive Thinking and Entrepreneurial Innovation of Civic Leaders of Higher Education Institutions'.
During his keynote speech, he emphasised the importance of having an entrepreneurial mindset that is characterised by resilience, intelligence, and a focus on finding solutions.
He also suggested, during this 20-year timeframe, the formation of billionaire clubs such as student projects, staff projects, and industry projects.
In addition, a forum titled Moving Forward: The Role and Challenges of Civic Leaders in Higher Education Institutions in Forming an Entrepreneurial Mindset and a workshop called Cultivating the Innovative Entrepreneurial Mindset and Attitude of Civic Leaders in Higher Education Institutions were also held.
Mr. Azrul Izham Hamzah, the Deputy Director of AKEPT, later officiated the closing ceremony.
